Who Were the Sons of God in Genesis 6?

Complete Bible Study Reveals End Times Connection

Have you ever wondered who the Bible refers to when it mentions "sons of God"? This phrase appears throughout Scripture, and understanding its meaning is absolutely crucial for interpreting biblical prophecy - especially the mysterious passage in Daniel 2 about iron and clay kingdoms mingling with "the seed of men."

The truth is, most Christians have never been taught the complete biblical definition of "sons of God," and this gap in understanding leaves them confused about critical end-times prophecy.

Why This Study Matters for Your Biblical Understanding

In Daniel 2:43, we read: "And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay."

The question that demands an answer is: Who are "they" that will mingle with the seed of men? To understand this prophecy, we must first understand exactly who the Bible calls "sons of God."

The Five Biblical References to "Sons of God"

Through careful scripture study, we discover that the Bible uses "sons of God" to refer to five distinct groups:

1. Jesus Christ - The Son of God (Singular)

The most common reference is to Jesus Christ as the Son of God (singular). This appears throughout the New Testament:

  • John 20:31: "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God"

  • John 1:34: "And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God"

  • Luke 1:35: "Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God"

  • Matthew 16:16: "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God"

Even the devils recognized Christ as the Son of God (Luke 4:41, Mark 3:11), and Satan himself acknowledged this title during the temptation (Matthew 4:3,6).

2. The Nation of Israel - Sons of God (Plural)

The Bible also refers to the nation of Israel as "sons of God":

  • Exodus 4:22: "And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn"

  • Hosea 1:10: "Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God"

  • Isaiah 43:6: "I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth"

These are prophetic passages pointing to Israel's future spiritual rebirth as a nation.

3. Adam - The Son of God (Singular, Lowercase)

Luke 3:38 traces Jesus' genealogy back to "Adam, which was the son of God" (notice the lowercase 's'). Adam was called the son of God because he was created directly by God and was initially sinless.

4. Born-Again Christians - Sons of God (Plural)

Believers in Jesus Christ are called "sons of God":

  • John 1:12: "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name"

  • Romans 8:14: "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God"

  • 1 John 3:1: "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God"

When you're born again, you become a son of God - recreated spiritually and initially sinless in your new nature.

5. Angels - Sons of God (Plural)

The fifth biblical reference to "sons of God" is angels:

  • Job 1:6: "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them"

  • Job 38:4,7: "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth... When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"

  • Psalm 89:6: "For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?"

The Genesis 6 Connection - Why This Matters for End Times

Here's where biblical prophecy becomes critically important. In Genesis 6:2,4, we read:

"That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose... There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."

This passage describes fallen angels ("sons of God") mingling with human women ("daughters of men"), producing giants - "mighty men" and "men of renown." This corruption became so severe that God destroyed the world with a flood.

The Daniel 2 Prophecy Revealed

Now we can understand Daniel 2:43. The "they" who will mingle with the seed of men in the final world empire are the same "sons of God" (fallen angels) from Genesis 6.

Just as in Noah's day, fallen angels will again mingle with humanity, creating the same type of corruption that once filled the earth with violence. The iron and clay kingdom represents this final unholy mixture that will not hold together - "they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay."

God's Response - Then and Now

In Genesis 6, God's response was the worldwide flood. In the end times, Christ will return and His stone kingdom will "smash" these corrupted kingdoms (Daniel 2:44-45), just as He destroyed the world in Noah's day.

The same supernatural corruption that occurred in Genesis 6 will happen again in the last days.

Why Proper Bible Study Methods Matter

This study demonstrates why rightly dividing the word of truth is so crucial. When you see "sons of God" in Scripture, context determines whether it refers to:

  • Christ (singular, capitalized)

  • Israel (plural, prophetic)

  • Adam (singular, lowercase)

  • Christians (plural, present)

  • Angels (plural, both faithful and fallen)

Without this understanding, critical prophecies like Daniel 2 remain mysterious and confusing.

The Urgency of This Message

We live in the last days, and understanding these biblical truths isn't just academic - it's preparation for what's coming. Just as the corruption in Noah's day reached a climax, so will the final mingling of fallen angels with humanity.

But there's hope! Jesus Christ, the true Son of God, will return to establish His kingdom and destroy all corruption forever.

Are you ready? Have you become a son of God through faith in Jesus Christ?

If you haven't trusted Christ as your Savior, don't wait. The same God who destroyed the world in Noah's day will judge it again - but this time with fire, not water.

This study barely scratches the surface of this fascinating biblical topic. For the complete exposition with all the scripture references and deeper insights, I humbly encourage you to listen to the entire message. You'll discover even more connections between Genesis 6 and end-times prophecy that will strengthen your understanding of God's Word. 🎧📖
