What Does John the Baptist Teach Us About Humility and Self-Denial?

Are You Taking the Glory That Belongs to Jesus?

Have you ever found yourself secretly desiring recognition for your spiritual service? That moment when public opinion swings in your favor, and you're tempted to bask in the praise rather than redirect it to Christ?

John the Baptist faced this exact scenario. With the entire Jewish nation eagerly anticipating the Messiah, public sentiment gathered strongly in John's favor. The people were ready in their hearts to believe that John himself was the Christ. He had the perfect opportunity to claim glory for himself.

But he didn't.

Instead, he made one of the most powerful declarations of self-denial in Scripture: "I am not the Christ" (John 1:20).

Three Profound Declarations That Reveal John's Heart

In John chapter 1, we see three revolutionary statements from John the Baptist that completely counter our natural human tendencies:

  1. Christ's Pre-existence (John 1:15) - John acknowledged that Jesus "was before me," recognizing His eternal nature

  2. Christ's Lordship (John 1:23) - John defined himself merely as "the voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Make straight the way of the Lord'"

  3. Christ's Superiority (John 1:27) - John confessed, "I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal"

Each statement systematically dismantled any potential for self-promotion. While our hearts naturally want to appear "better than we actually are," John modeled radical humility.

The Desert Experience That Shaped John's Character

What made John capable of such extraordinary self-denial?

The sermon suggests a profound insight: John's time in the wilderness. In the desert, away from comfort and convenience, John learned genuine self-denial. The wilderness experience taught him:

  • Life without luxury - He learned to be content with little

  • Character without companionship - He developed strength that didn't depend on others' approval

This wilderness training prepared John to deny himself and point exclusively to Jesus—even when public opinion would have crowned him king.

As American Christians, we often "shy away from the desert times." We avoid discomfort, struggle, and the very experiences that might develop in us the same character John displayed. Perhaps this explains why genuine humility feels so difficult to attain.

Five Practical Steps to Develop John's Heart of Humility

How can we cultivate this same spirit of self-denial in our lives today?

  1. Embrace your "desert times" - Rather than avoiding struggles, recognize them as opportunities for character development

  2. Practice being "just a voice" - Like John who said, "I am the voice," focus on the message of Christ rather than building your own platform

  3. Redirect praise - When complimented for spiritual service, develop the habit of immediately redirecting glory to Christ

  4. Release religious credentials - Notice John didn't identify himself by titles or achievements, but by his relationship to Christ

  5. Regularly declare your unworthiness - Make John's confession your own: "I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal"

The greatest paradox of Christian living is this: those who consider themselves unworthy, like John, are the very ones Jesus calls the greatest (Matthew 11:11).

"John was great because he considered himself unworthy... I'll stick with your worth because I've got none aside from you, Lord."

Will you join me in laying down every trophy, every accolade, and every bit of recognition at the feet of Jesus Christ? That's what makes a true worshiper, a true minister, a true Christian.
