The Hard Truth About Biblical Gender Roles That Modern Churches Won't Teach
This is a tough message for our modern world. It's hard to swallow some of the truths in God's Word, especially when it comes to biblical gender roles and what 1 Corinthians 11 teaches about men, women, and God's divine order of authority.
The world has completely flipped God's design upside down. We've got men acting like women and women trying to be men, and somehow the church thinks this is progress. But I've got a novel theological idea: let's actually read and believe what the Bible says.
What Does 1 Corinthians 11 Actually Teach About Head Coverings?
"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." - 1 Corinthians 11:3
There's an order of authority here that God established, and by verse 7, we read:
"For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man." - 1 Corinthians 11:7
Now here's where people get all twisted up about additional coverings - hats, scarves, doilies that look like caps. But if you keep reading, the Bible defines exactly what this covering is:
"But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering." - 1 Corinthians 11:15
Pretty simple, right? Hair is glory, and hair is a covering. There are two types of hair mentioned in 1 Corinthians 11: short hair and long hair. That's the contrast God is making.
The Biblical Distinction Between Men and Women
For a man to not be covered means he would have short hair. For a woman to be covered in the context of 1 Corinthians 11 means she would have long hair.
"Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven." - 1 Corinthians 11:4-5
God is making a distinction between men and women through this outward symbol. It's not about salvation - it doesn't save you or make you less saved. But it's certainly a way to honor God and show His created order.
Why God's Order of Authority Matters in Marriage and Church
The Laodicean church always asks the wrong questions: "How long does the hair have to be?" Instead of asking, "Okay Lord, I'll just have long hair, amen!"
Why are you looking for a loophole? Why don't you ask God how He would have you honor His Word instead of trying to find a way out of doing what He asked?
Biblical Marriage Roles and Authority
"For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church." - Ephesians 5:23
God has given an order of authority in homes, just like Christ is the head of the church. We have authority structures in work, sports, academics, and every sphere of life. God expects us to have that same order in our homes and His church.
"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." - 1 Timothy 2:12
The context here is the corporate assembly of the church. It's about respecting God's order of authority.
God's Created Order from the Beginning
This wasn't a result of the Fall. This distinction between male and female was God's created order before sin entered the world. When we read Genesis, we see:
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." - Genesis 1:27
But then in Genesis 2:18: "And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."
God created woman to help man with his loneliness, his physical daily needs, and to complement him mentally, intellectually, and spiritually as she joins him in worshiping God.
Living Out Biblical Gender Roles in Today's World
For Men: Be the Godly Leader God Called You to Be
Men, we are to be the head of our homes. Not tyrants, not dictators, but godly leaders who love our wives as Christ loved the church. Accept the help God has given you through your wife.
For Women: The Honor of the Help Meet Position
Ladies, you were created to be a help meet - not a captured slave. There's a difference. Sinful men will twist Scripture to their own destruction, but God's design is honorable.
You give glory to God by giving glory and honor to your husband, by standing by his side. The world sees that. When you follow your husband's leadership (even when you think his idea might not be the best), you're honoring God.
That's actually a very honorable position. You might have a better idea that gets trumped by your husband's decision, but when you're willing to go along because he's not asking you to sin, you honor God.
The World Needs to See the Difference
This sick society refuses to honor and respect women. The internet is flooded with filthy pictures exploiting women. Highways are full of billboards putting women half-naked for everyone to see.
But when Christian men and women stay in their lanes - ladies in the lady lane, men in the men lane - the world sees something different. They see God's created order in action.
Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: God's Perfect Design
"For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man." - 1 Corinthians 11:8-9
This appeals to Creation. Man originates from the dust of the ground, and his purpose is to glorify God. Woman originated from the rib of Adam in God's created order.
Animals weren't created like this. God didn't put a male lion to sleep, but He put the human male Adam to sleep to create woman. There's something special about how God designed men and women.
Outward Symbols Matter
The outward symbols we see in 1 Corinthians 11 - long hair for women and short hair for men - are distinctions God made as outward signs to show glory unto Him. It doesn't save you, but it's certainly a way to honor God with the truth.
When we serve God, we're giving Him glory and the world sees that. When we don't serve Christ, we're dishonoring our God and the world sees that too.
Embracing God's Design for Biblical Gender Roles
God's created order isn't outdated - it's eternal truth. In a world that's completely flipped upside down, Christians need to stand on the Word of God and live out His design for biblical manhood and womanhood.
The distinction between male and female, the roles of husband and wife, the order of authority in the home and church - these aren't suggestions. They're God's Word, and we need to live by it regardless of what this crazy world thinks.
